Unleash the spirit of giving

Living with an open hand – as Corporates and as Inviduals.

Embracing social responsibility: businesses unleash the spirit of giving.

Recently our training adventures took us to RCL Foods in Westville, KZN.  I was amazed by the beautiful functional local art used in boardrooms, staircases and all open areas.  Recycled items and nature are infused in beautiful ways.  But what really caught my eye, was how many meals RCL Do More Foundation donate on a daily basis – well done!  We are proud to be associated with you!

In a world where profit margins and bottom lines often dominate corporate conversations, a refreshing shift is occurring. Businesses are increasingly recognising the importance of social responsibility and are weaving the spirit of giving into their corporate DNA. As the season of giving approaches, companies around the globe are not only embracing their role as economic entities but are also becoming agents of positive change in their communities. This blog explores the growing trend of businesses embracing social responsibility and utilising the season of giving to make a lasting impact. You can have a big impact on the world around you.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not a new concept, but its prominence has grown significantly in recent years, probably as an awakening after Covid-19. Businesses are no longer viewed solely through the lens of profit generation; stakeholders, including consumers and employees, are placing greater importance on a company’s ethical and social footprint. CSR has evolved from mere philanthropy to a comprehensive approach that encompasses sustainable business practices, environmental stewardship, and a commitment to social causes.

As the holiday season approaches, there is a palpable sense of goodwill and generosity in the air, despite all the senseless wars taking place. This time of year presents a unique opportunity for businesses to leverage the festive spirit and engage in meaningful acts of giving. Whether through charitable donations, volunteer initiatives, or community partnerships, companies are finding creative ways to channel their resources toward making a positive impact.

As an individual reading this, you can also make a difference with your person contribution.  Nothing is too small or too little – please consider the plight of those less fortunate and support a worthy cause (below are some suggestions).  As individuals we often don’t know where to start – others have done the groundwork for you!

Many businesses are allocating a portion of their profits to support charitable organisations. Whether it’s contributing to local feeding schemes, healthcare initiatives, or education programs, these donations go a long way in addressing societal needs.

Some companies are encouraging their employees to give back by providing paid volunteer time. This not only fosters a sense of community within the workplace but also allows employees to actively participate in causes they are passionate about.  Our Mandela day is a lovely example of volunteering time.

Businesses are increasingly adopting environmentally friendly practices, such as reducing waste, embracing renewable energy, and promoting eco-friendly products. These initiatives contribute not only to the well-being of the planet but also resonate positively with environmentally conscious consumers.

Embracing social responsibility is not just about philanthropy; it’s a strategic move that can enhance a company’s reputation and build brand loyalty. Consumers are more likely to support businesses that align with their values and demonstrate a commitment to making a positive impact on society. By actively participating in the season of giving, companies can strengthen their relationships with customers and foster a positive brand image.

As businesses continue to evolve, so does the understanding of their role in society. The season of giving provides a unique opportunity for companies to go beyond profit-driven motives and contribute to the well-being of the communities they serve. Embracing social responsibility is not just a trend but a fundamental shift in the way businesses operate, proving that success can be measured not only in financial terms but also in the positive impact made on the world. This holiday season let’s celebrate the businesses that are making a difference and inspiring others to follow suit.

Some causes you could consider supporting:

Each year the Santa Shoebox Project collects and distributes personalised gifts of essential items and treats for underprivileged children throughout South Africa and Namibia. In 17 years, your generosity has reached 1 152 587 children.  PEP is one of the drop-off points.

The Freedom Challenge Fund, established by extreme Mountain Biking Athletes, sponsors scholars in a remote area to attend and finish school.  So far, the Fund has sponsored 72 scholars, representing 213 scholar years. Initially the sponsorship was for the final 3 years of high school but has since opted to admit students for 5 years.  Every rand helps more children to have a better future.

Abraham Kriel Bambanani is a registered NPO providing care and skills development for traumatised children and youth in need, in the greater Johannesburg area. This establishment is entirely dependant on public donations. They provide shelter, physical care, rehabilitation and skills development for beneficiaries that had been subjected to trauma, abuse, molestation, poverty, neglect and unemployment. This is done via residential care, community services and educational programmes.

Please comment below on those companies you know are making a difference as we would like to applaud and encourage them.

Let’s spread some kindness and goodness wherever we go!
