2026 arrived – no announcement, just movement

New Year’s day arrived one morning.

No announcement. No ceremony.

He simply slipped into my DMs, as quietly as a thought I hadn’t finished yet.

I’d never met him before,

yet he felt familiar

as he settled onto the couch beside me.

“So,” he said softly,

“what’s it going to be?”

The same ol’ same ol’.

The easy answer. No pressure. No effort.

The vintage comfort of another morning. Another year.

2026 sensed my answer before I offered it.

“Is that what you really want?”

No judgement. No edge. Just space.

The simplicity lingered.

I breathed it in, letting it settle.

Outside, the world continued without comment. Morning light spilling across the valley below. In the background, the kettle rumbling to the boil

And that was when it landed.

Years do not demand transformation.

They offer it.

They do not shout or shove or insist on reinvention.

They sit beside you, quiet and attentive, asking if you are willing to notice yourself as you move through them.

Maybe that’s the real question of a new year.

Not what will you change,

but what you choose to pay attention to.

Years, I realised, do not arrive with instructions.

They arrive with permission.

Permission to pause.

To listen.

To choose.

They do not ask us to change.

Only to pay attention.

And this year?

He is still on the couch.

Unhurried. Unbothered.

Waiting to see what I do next.
